Actor Tom Selleck, star of the popular "Magnum P.I." television series filmed here during the 1980s, has placed his home in the exclusive Black Point community on the market.

Selleck, who has owned the three-bedroom, three-bathroom residence since 1981, is asking $2.76 million, according to information on the Honolulu Board of Realtors' multiple listing service.

Zane Lubin, Selleck's business manager, said that Selleck has spent very little time in the islands during the past several years due to his busy acting schedule on the mainland.

Selleck currently is New York where he is acting in the Broadway play "A Thousand Clowns."

"He just wasn't using the house at all," said Lubin. "He couldn't see getting over there too often in the next two years."

Selleck acquired the 4,874-square-foot, fee-simple Black Point property in 1981 for $700,000 but has extensively renovated the property to suit his personal lifestyle.

The wood-frame residence -- which includes a two-bedroom main house and a one-bedroom guest cottage -- boasts a private theater room, complete with reel-to-reel film projectors and a Dolby surround sound system.

The home, which overlooks the Kahala coast, was built in 1929. It also includes a nonchlorinated dipping pool and an open deck with a hot tub.

The listing agent is Jo Frasier of Prudential Locations Inc.

Lubin said that that Selleck "was emotionally" tied to the home, given the amount of work he put into it. But Selleck found that he couldn't justify owning it even as a vacation property due to the little time he spends in Hawaii these days.

Selleck currently lives in Hidden Valley, Calif., where he owns a ranch in that Southern California town.

He played the lead in the "Magnum P.I." television series filmed here from 1980-88. Since then, he has played in several TV shows and a number of films, including "Three Men and a Baby."

Lubin said Selleck will have a role in an upcoming television mini-series and will probably do another television series.
