Rookie eliminates Garcia
in Rio surf quarterfinal


Defending world champion Sunny Garcia was upset by WCT rookie Joel Parkinson of Australia yesterday in their quarterfinal heat of the Rio Surf International contest at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Garcia was the last remaining Hawaii surfer. He was outpointed, 20.4-18.4.

Jammers place third at Junior Olympic volleyball

The Jammers Volleyball Club 12-1 team from Honolulu tied for third in the girls 12-under Gold Division at the USA Volleyball Association's Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The team, coached by Debby Yee, lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Arsel Eagles from Puerto Rico, 25-8, 25-14.

Major League Soccer holding youth camps

Three Major League Soccer Camps will be held on Oahu this month, offering expert instruction from a team of international coaches.

Fonoti earns preseason All-American honor

Kahuku High product Toniu Fonoti, a junior offensive guard for the Nebraska football team, has been named a preseason first-team All-American by College Football News magazine.

Strong Man Challenge scheduled for Saturday

The Power Unlimited inaugural Strong Man Challenge is scheduled for Saturday at Windward Mall.

Five weight-class titles will be awarded in the competition that begins at 10 a.m. Events include the truck pull, farmer's walk, log lift and automobile deadlift.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate will come off the disabled list tomorrow and L.A. is expected to send Jeff Williams to Triple-A Las Vegas.
