Ravel recital
at Atherton

Heidi Lowy will debut with a recital of Maurice Ravel's piano compositions 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hawaii Public Radio's Atherton Performing Arts Studio.

Her recital will include the "Menuet antique," "Pavane pour une infante defunte," "Jeux d'eau," five sections of "Miroirs" and "Le Tombeau de Couperin."

Tickets for the recital are $12.50 for HPR members, $15 general admission and $10 for students. Call 955-8821.

Calling all falsettos

The Aloha Festivals is seeking contestants for the 7th annual Frank B. Shaner Hawaiian Falsetto Contest.

The contest to showcase the talents of amateur falsetto singers is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Hawaii Theatre in downtown Honolulu. An amateur is defined as someone who has never made a professional recording.

Aloha Festivals must receive completed applications by July 27. Applications are available by calling Aloha Festivals at 589-1771 or toll-free from the neighbor islands at 1-(800)-852-7690. Include a demo tape of the song you plan to sing.

Finalists will be selected by a committee and will be notified by Aug. 3.

Tickets cost $30 for orchestra, $25 for balcony and $20 for upper balcony. Each ticket will also be assessed a $2 theatre restoration fee. There will be a $5 discount per ticket with the presentation of an Aloha Festivals ribbon at time of purchase.

The top three contestants will receive prizes. The grand prize winner will receive a Hula Records recording contract, a neighbor island weekend getaway for two and $500 cash.

Keiki hula contest set

The Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society Inc. will present the 26th annual Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula competition July 26 to 28 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena.

The competition, open to keiki 6 to 12 years old, was established in 1975 to commemorate the birthday anniversary of Queen Lili'uokalani.

The competition features 22 halau from Oahu, Maui and Guam. The schedule is 6 p.m. July 26 for the Miss & Master Keiki Hula competition, 6 p.m. July 27 for the Group-Hula Kahiko competition, and noon July 28 for the Group-Hula 'Auana competition.

Tickets are $8.50 for arena/loges and $7.50 for (upper level) general. Box office service fees are not included. Tickets go on sale at the Blaisdell Center box office on July 14. Call the Blaisdell at 591-2211.
