Wilton can’t turn
down chance for ‘freak’

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team needed to increase its depth for the coming season.

The Warriors might have done just that by adding Jeff Gleason.

The 6-foot-3 outside hitter owns a vertical jump estimated to be between 45-50 inches and can touch 12 feet off a standing jump. A videotape of Gleason prompted one UH player to call Gleason a "freak-of nature."

Gleason could step into the spot vacated by Torry Tukuafu, whose eligibility ended after this season. Gleason will have three years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Pacific Union College, a small college in Angwin, Calif.

This fall, the Warriors, who return 13 players, have added three recruits. And UH has a list of 12 possible others who would be interested in walking on.

"We're going to be deeper this year," UH head coach Mike Wilton said.
