2 Wahine named
All-American

University of Hawaii senior pitcher Desiree Duran and junior second baseman Natalie Gonzales were named to the Easton Sports All-America softball team yesterday.

Duran was a second-team selection after leading the Wahine in both ERA (1.40) and strikeouts (126). She was 17-5 this past season.

Gonzales, named to the third team, led Hawaii in batting (.336) and had a .962 fielding percentage.

Hawaii boxers advance at junior nationals

Waianae's Glenn Miyose upset second-ranked Karl Dargan yesterday to lead five Hawaii boxers into today's quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior National Boxing Championships at Marquette, Mich.

Miyose, ranked third in the 125-pound weight class, won a 3-2 decision over Dargan.

Also winning were: Kini Sofa of Waianae, who scored a 3-2 decision over Omar Crespo in the 106-pound class; Ronald Cordeiro of Waianae, who earned a 3-2 decision over Jonathan Brown; Waianae's Jeff Pelen Jr., whose 132-pound bout against Daniel Hernandez was stopped by the referee in the first round; and Glenn Dunnings of Honolulu, whose 139-pound fight against Raymond Smith was stopped in the second round.

The only Hawaii loss was by Rance Okana of Honolulu, who was defeated by Jorge Teron, 5-0.

Whiting tied for 13th in Women's Publinx golf

Hilo's Leah Whiting carded an opening round 77 yesterday to tie for 13th heading into today's second round of stroke-play qualifying in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Long Grove, Ill.

Whiting was six strokes behind Candie Kung, who shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday.

Michelle Wie, 11, of Honolulu, the youngest player to ever qualify for a USGA women's amateur event, opened with an 84 that included 41 putts.

"I usually putt better, I just couldn't read the greens," said Wie, who lost in the first round of match play last year.

Other Hawaii competitors are: Lehua Wise of Lihue (81), Maui's Lisa Kajihara (82), Hilo's Christine Kim (87) and Whitney Ueno (88); Rose Pagan of Kula (88); Kiilani Matsuyoshi of Wailua (90); and Lihue's Kimberly Yama (89), Jennie Pleas (89) and Shelcie Takenouchi (92).

Hori, Tanaka qualify for Junior PGA nationals

Honolulu's Ayumi Hori and Reyn Tanaka of Kailua won their respective divisions yesterday at the Aloha Section Junior PGA Championship at Makaha Resort Golf Club.

Hori, 16, won the girls division with a final-round 80--156, one stroke over Hilo's Amanda Wilson. Tanaka had the tournament's low round, shooting a 69 yesterday for a 145 total.

Hori and Tanaka will play at the July 18-21 PGA Junior Nationals in Ohio.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored yesterday as New York beat the Montreal Expos, 4-1.

With the Mets down 1-0, Agbayani led off the eighth inning with a walk off reliever Guillermo Mota. After Mota's bad throw on a sacrifice bunt by Desi Relaford, second baseman Jose Vidro threw wildly to third trying to get Agbayani. Rey Ordonez then drove in Agbayani with a single off Mota.

Also, Agbayani broke up a perfect game by Troy Mattes in the fifth inning with a single up the middle on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. Agbayani was later thrown out at third by left fielder Vladimir Guerrero to end the inning.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School graduate pitched the eighth inning Los Angeles' 9-2 loss to Arizona, striking out two and walking one.
