St. Francis A.D.

Carey Won will be the new athletic director at St. Francis School.

Won told the Star-Bulletin yesterday that he will replace Tony Tyler, who resigned recently to accept a job as an assistant basketball coach at Chaminade University.

Won, 34, takes over officially at the end of July, he said.

Won has been the youth program director at the Central YMCA the past 13 years. He has also been an assistant varsity volleyball coach and junior varsity basketball coach at St. Francis the past three years.

He said he doesn't plan to make major changes to the Troubadour sports programs. About 140 of the nearly 400 students at the all-girls school participated in athletics last year.

"We just pretty much want to pick it up where Tony was going with it," Won said. "The move to Division I in basketball is a big one for us. That will be a challenge."

With Tyler as head coach, St. Francis' varsity basketball team won the past four Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II championships. Last month, Tyler said St. Francis would move to Division I next season.

Former assistant Glenn Higuchi will be the new head basketball coach.

Won is a graduate of Damien Memorial High School -- where he lettered in volleyball and basketball -- and the University of Hawaii.
