5 Seasiders on
All-America team

Led by junior Petra Gaspar, five members of the Brigham Young-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams were selected to the ITA NCAA Division II All-American team.

It was the third consecutive year that Gaspar earned all-America distinction in both singles and doubles. Tagifano So'onalole, Gaspar's doubles partner, also earned an all-America citation in both. Gaspar and So'onalole ranked No. 1 in doubles.

Also honored from the Seasider women's team was junior Tomoko Sukegawa.

The BYUH women finished second at the NCAA Division II national tournament, losing in the final to end its NCAA record 103-match winning streak.

Cited from the men's team were freshmen Peter Madarassy and Hung Soon Park. Both were named all-American in singles and doubles. The Seasider men finished fourth at the national tournament.

State high school rodeo set for Parker Ranch

The State High School Rodeo Finals, featuring some 300 cowboys and cowgirls from five islands, will be held at 8 a.m. tomorrow through Monday at Parker Ranch on the Big Island.

Real Dudoit of Molokai High returns to defend her all-around cowgirl title.

The top finishers will advance to the national competition, July 22-29, at Springfield, Ill.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus returned after missing seven games with back spasms. He went 2-for-5 with a walk in New York's 6-5 win over Philadelphia before being lifted for a pinch-runner in the ninth.

Agbayani opened the game with a walk and advanced to second on an infield hit, but he was stranded there, as the heart of the Mets' order failed to drive him home. He also advanced to third in the eighth, but Robin Ventura struck out with the bases loaded.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate gave up one earned run on two hits in one inning as Los Angeles lost to Arizona, 13-9.

Fetters opened the seventh with the Dodgers down 11-9. He allowed a one-out double to Steve Finley, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in the game. Finley advanced to third on a wild pitch. Fetters next allowed a run-scoringdouble to Danny Bautista before retiring the next two batters.
