Symphony Ball earns
a solid drum roll

THE HONOLULU SYMPHONY Ball was a resounding success from beginning to end last Saturday at the Hilton. The Coral Ballroom was set up beautifully for the black-tie crowd of 750. Ballet and swing dance groups performed before Conductor Sam Wong and the Symphony played Strauss waltzes to start the dancing. Ann Simpson kicked off her shoes and waded into the "Blue Danube." Then Matt Catingub and the Symphony Pops started swinging and dancers really packed the floor. Trudy and Al Wong's daughter, Shaaroni, is on the Boston U. dance team and cut a rug with her dad. Ginai and Matt sang and Jimmy Borges did a few numbers. It was all great. Gov. Ben Cayetano, Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, Mayor Jeremy Harris and Councilmen Mufi Hannemann and Duke Bainum attended. Asked what she thought of "Pearl Harbor," the lieutenant guv said she liked it in general and praised Josh Harnett. "I think he's going to be a big star," she said. Symphony Board Chair Carolyn Berry, the orchestra's No. 1 financial supporter who bought four tables, also gave Josh her strong vote of approval. Rick and Bernadette Hamada loved the film. Mufi gave the movie a thumbs up. But Joe Moore, a "Tora, Tora, Tora" fan, said he demands complete accuracy and is reluctant to see it. The UH was represented at the ball by outgoing President Ken and Lori Mortimer and Athletic Director Hugh Yoshida and wife Patti. Wine for the evening was donated by Mark Milton's M&S Brokerage. The chef's opakapaka Wellington was a winner. Ball Co-chairs Trudy Schandler-Wong and Caroline Tollefson can take a bow. They praised their volunteers. ...
