Colorful comedy
thrives on chaos to
tickle the funny bone

Star-Bulletin

The Italian performance group Teatro del Vicolo makes its United States premiere performing "La Flaminia Rapita" (The Kidnapping of Flaminia) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Kennedy Theatre tomorrow and Sunday.

The company specializes in commedia dell'arte, Italian comedic theater "featuring improbable characters, compromising situations, colorful costumes and beautifully designed masks."

Take away the costumes and masks, and it's really the forerunner to today's television sitcoms.

Although there will be some Italian dialogue, most of the story is conveyed through action.

Internationally renowned director Antonio Fava leads the troupe and says, "The skill of commedia dell'arte is making complete chaos on stage work."

Fava also founded the International School of the Comic Actor in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and teaches international workshops in commedia dell'arte techniques that became a Northern Italian tradition more than 200 years ago.

Hector "Huggie" Merida of Globale Energy in Los Angeles will be one of a slew of DJs from both here and elsewhere spinning at this weekend's big "Love Festival: A Decade of Dancing."

The traveling fest, which began last month in St. Louis and wended its way through Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, is making its first Hawaii stop in Maui tonight and ends up at the Hawaiian Water Adventure Park here tomorrow.

The parking lot opens at 7, the dancing starts as enough of a crowd shows up and continues until the wee hours of the morning. Ticket prices start at $20 at the usual locations, $30 at the door.
