ILH pursuing
JV football revival

By Dave Reardon

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu is trying to revive junior varsity football this fall, after three seasons without it.

The ILH dropped JV because several schools, including Iolani, didn't have enough players. Iolani coach Wendell Look said the Raiders might be able field a JV team if some players are allowed to play varsity and JV.

"We've always wanted to have a JV," Look said. "At this time we can't commit, but we're trying. If we can have the concession of swinging players, we might be able to do it."

Schools will be limited to suiting up 65 players each game this fall because of a new league rule. St. Louis and Kamehameha both had around 100 varsity players last year. Many would have been on JV teams, if they existed.

In 1997, the last year of JV, only St. Louis, Kamehameha and Punahou had teams.

"We're in the throes of trying to get it going again," ILH executive secretary Clay Benham said. "We will bring a proposal to the principals."

St. Francis promoted: The St. Francis School varsity basketball team will move up to the league's Division I next season, Troubadours coach and athletic director Tony Tyler said.

St. Francis has won the last four ILH girls Division II titles, amassing a 50-5 league record.

"With our success the past four years, we felt going up to Division I would increase our ability to compete and maybe in the future get into the state tournament," Tyler said.
