Next season's schedule for the University of Hawaii men's basketball team continues to take shape.

Alcorn State has agreed to play UH here, but the schools are still working on the exact date.

"They're going to be on the schedule," Rainbows associate head coach Bob Nash said. "We're just trying to agree on exactly when. Right now it looks like Dec. 10."

The Braves were 15-15 overall last season and 13-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Nash also said Iona has agreed to complete the Rainbow Classic field, which also includes Georgia, Portland, Boston College, Arkansas State, Holy Cross, Miami of Ohio and host UH.

The Rainbows are also in Hawaii-Hilo's preseason tournament this coming season, among a field including Louisiana State, Wisconsin and Pepperdine.

Ostler to get a look

Troy Ostler, UH's top shot blocker last season, has been invited to the exclusive NBA Pre-Draft Camp, June 5-8 in Chicago. The 6-foot-10 Ostler averaged 15.5 points and 5.9 rebounds last season, despite being bothered by ankle injuries.

Ostler will get the chance to show pro scouts and coaches his game along with over 60 other top players. The NBA Draft is June 27.

Two in summer league

The NCAA Summer Basketball League gets underway June 15 with two games at Roosevelt High School.

Only one current UH player, senior guard Mike McIntyre, and one former Rainbow, Seth Sundberg, are expected to play. Sundberg, a UH center in 1995 and '96, plays pro ball in Russia.

Most of the current Rainbows have gone home for the summer.

The six-team summer league is on Friday and Saturday nights, concluding with the Aug. 18 championship game. In previous years, games were at Kaimuki High School, but are at Roosevelt this year because of renovations at Kaimuki.

Tip-ins

Nash, who as a UH basketball player led the Rainbows to two postseason appearances, will light the torch at Saturday's opening ceremonies of the Aloha State Games. "I'm looking forward to it. I've been training hard," he quipped. ... Sophomore forward Bosko Radovic, who suffered a season-ending broken leg five games into last season, is progressing well. "I've been able to start one-on-one drills," he said. "And I've been working with (trainer) Jayson Goo every day." ... Fresno State forward Shannon Swillis was denied an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. The Southern Cal transfer will probably try to play in Europe. ... Openings remain for the Rainbow summer camp, June 8-13 for ages 5-17. The sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $150. Call 956-6501 for information. ... Head coach Riley Wallace just returned from his annual fishing trip with his brothers. ... The Rainbows completed the spring with a semester team grade point average "right around 3.0," academic advisor Adam Lockwood said. "They're coming along really well." In the past, the basketball team has usually had better overall grades in the fall, due to increased practice, game and travel commitments in the spring. But this year the team improved slightly in the second semester, despite a season lengthened by the NCAA Tournament and the UHPA strike.
