John Gielgud bio
takes London by storm

PERHAPS there's nothing more important in life than friends, and it's nice to see them succeed. When I was in London in February I houseguested with old friend Sheridan Morley and his wife, Ruth Leon. At that time Ruth was launching a new magazine, Theatergoer, with the wife of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and had both written and directed an off-Broadway show in New York. Sheridan finished his new authorized biography of John Gielgud which he calls "John G." It has now been released in Great Britain and instantly became a best-seller. It is already in the top ten in sales and the Times of London called it "magnificent." It couldn't happen to a nicer guy, and in the first chapter of the galley proofs, I saw he told of meeting the famous actor at Honolulu Airport in 1963. We'll have to wait in America to read the book -- it won't be released here until January ...

AND, since he appeared on "Friends" on TV, "Magnum, P.I." star Tom Selleck apparently got a hankering to do comedy and expand his horizons. He's now preparing to play the role made famous by Jason Robards in "A Thousand Clowns" on Broadway ... Meanwhile, good pal Corky Trinidad, whose cartoons have appeared in the Star-Bulletin for over 30 years, will have a one-man showing of "Corky's Icons," opening Monday at the Ramsay Galleries, 1128 Smith St. It's the third time artist Ramsay has featured Corky in a one-man show of his cartoons ...

WE got several photo-faxes of the Varsity Theatre marquee when it announced "I'm in the Mood for Love," followed by "More Leg Room." Now the Star-Bulletin has printed the listing for a double feature showing June 14 at the Maui film fest. It's "Amy's Orgasm," preceded by "The Kiss." ...

Try topping this

WRITERS and filmmakers Nancy and Cliff Hollenbeck told friends at a La Mer dinner the unusual circumstance under which they met. Cliff was public relations director for an airline, and Nancy was hired as a flight attendant by the same airline. On her very first flight, the plane she was on was hijacked at gunpoint by a drug-crazed man bent on taking the plane to Cuba. The ordeal lasted two days before the gunman surrendered to the 21-year-old and let all the passengers go free. There was a media frenzy that followed the surrender and one thing led to another and Cliff and Nancy fell in love and have now been married nearly 30 years. Nobody in the party could come close to topping that tale. Incidentally, the Hollenbecks have a new book of photography, "Hawaii," in bookstores now ...

Doctor I.Q.

HE'S a practicing psychiatrist, but Dr. Mark Stitham doesn't spend all his time delving into people's psyches. He's also an actor, having appeared on stage in several productions in Hawaii, and an inveterate games player. He once won $11,000 in "Jeopardy" and you can bet he'd love to be on Regis' "Millionaire" show as well. In the meantime, he spent the morning of his 51st birthday coaching his youngest daughter, Allison, and 40 of her school chums at Aikahi Elementary School. He's started a chess team there and is preparing his charges for their first tournament next month ...
