The Surfriders rally from an
8-2 sixth-inning deficit to win
the state championship

The state tournament that almost never happened finished in dramatic fashion last night as Kailua rallied for seven runs in the final two innings to beat Mid-Pacific, 9-8, and claim the Wally Yonamine State Baseball Tournament championship.

Jarid Kawamoto's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Mike Cathcart with the winning run and triggered a wild celebration on the Aloha Stadium field as the Surfriders rejoiced in their first state title since 1969. Kailua relief pitcher Kamaile Santos, who led the Surfriders past Kauai in Friday's quarterfinals, picked up the win, while Mid-Pacific ace Ricky Bauer took the loss.

Mid-Pacific looked like it was destined to claim its first championship since 1992, leading 8-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. But Kailua rallied for six runs on seven hits to tie the game.

Santos worked out of a jam in the top of the seventh to set up the dramatic conclusion. Cathcart led off with a ground ball that squirted under the legs of Mid-Pacific first baseman Ryan Basco. Travis Hayashida then sacrificed Cathcart to second. After an intentional walk to Jory Pearce, Chris Ching singled to right field to load the bases. Bauer then got Kawika Kekaula to pop to second base for the second out. Kawamoto, who was 0-for-3 going into his final at bat, drilled a shot to center for the game-winning hit.

The Surfriders took home the state championship trophy despite committing five errors that led to five unearned runs.

In yesterday's semifinal games:

Mid-Pacific 9, Moanalua 0:

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Basco struck out five in a complete-game, four-hit shutout to lead the Owls to the title game.

Basco got all the support he needed in the top of the first when Kurt Uwaine scored on a groundout by Clint Copulos. The Owls broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Kevin Kahn's two-run single and five runs in the fifth. Vincent Farkas' two-run single capped the scoring for Mid-Pacific.

Copulos, the Owls' fifth-place hitter, made the Menehunes pay for walking clean-up hitter Dane Marcouiller four times in the game by going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Kailua 8, St. Joseph's 2:

The Surfriders stole eight bases en route to earning a place in the title game.

St. Joseph's, making its first tournament appearance since 1965, took an early lead when Aaron Carvalho led off the game with a double to right and scored on a single by Ronnie Carvalho.

But that would be the Cardinals' only run of the inning despite control problems by Kailua pitcher Chad Kajiyama, who walked three in the inning.

Kailua tied the game in the bottom of the second on Kamaile Santos' double that scored Jonathan Tabar.

Santos later scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Cardinal pitcher Tyson Usui.

The Surfriders' aggression on the basepaths paid off, as seven of those steals led to runs.

Kajiyama settled down to shut the Cardinals out until the sixth inning.
