Smith second in
WAC track

Staff and wire reports

FRESNO, Calif. >> Junior Cheryl Smith finished second in the 1,500-meter race and the University of Hawaii finished eighth out of eight teams at the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships yesterday.

Smith, who won the 3,000-meter race Friday, was timed in 16 minutes, 58.40 seconds yesterday. Tulsa's Fride Vullum won the race in 16:49.13.

Hawaii finished with 46 points; Rice won the team championship with 142.5 points.

"We expected to finish eighth,'' said first-year coach Carmyn James. "But I also expected to only score 35 points. For our first year, I'm very pleased. It's upward from here."

The Wahine track program was dropped in 1985 and restarted this year.

Also scoring points for Hawaii yesterday was Casey McGuire-Turcotte, who had a personal best in finishing fourth in the 1,500-meters (4:31.78) and was sixth in the 800 meters (2:12.52).

In the high jump, Sarah McDiarmid was third (5-foot-9.25) and Oliva Smoody fifth (5-5.25). The 4x400 (4:11.64) and 4x100 relay teams (53.69) both finished seventh.

[WINNERS & LOSERS]

[WINNERS]

Brandy Richardson: The talented girls basketball player for Kalaheo High School has been a big part of the Mustangs' four straight Oahu Interscholastic Federation championships. She scored 41 points in Wednesday's title-game win against Aiea.

Brian Viloria: Waipahu's Olympic boxer turned pro officially on Tuesday and scored a convincing four-round unanimous decision over Ben Jun Escobia.

BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team: Despite a loss in the Division II national title game, the Seasiders have been mighty impressive for a long time. The loss broke a 103-match win streak and a four-year run as national champions.

[LOSERS]

Deion Sanders: He went 3-for-3 in his first game of the season for the Cincinnati Reds, but has gone just 4-for-34 since. He's batting a paltry .189.

The Bucs and Tampa Bay: No, not football. Going into today's games, the Pittsburgh Pirates, a.k.a. the Bucs, were 13-27 with a .325 winning percentage. But the worst record in Major League Baseball belongs to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays --11-30, .268.

Darryl Strawberry: He got two years' house arrest at a drug treatment center Thursday for disappearing two months ago from a rehab center and going on a four-day drug binge. If he violates the sentence this time, he'll go to prison for 18 months.
