Takanohana still
undefeated; Musashimaru
wins convincingly

TOKYO, May 19 (Kyodo) -- Yokozuna Takanohana backed Tochiazuma out of the ring in a one-sided match Saturday and emerged the lone undefeated wrestler seven days into the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

With 21 tournament titles to his name already, Takanohana appears ready to pull away from the rest of the field in the 15-day tourney as he overwhelmed the sekiwake at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan with a series of thrusts for the win.

Tochiazuma, who had hoped to keep himself in the title chase with a win, suffered his third loss.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai (6-1) remains a step behind the yokozuna after shoving out top maegashira Takanowaka (2-5), while No. 11 maegashira Higonoumi (6-1) was saddled with his first loss of the tourney by Mongolia's Kyokutenho (4-3) in an earlier bout.

While Takanohana appears on a roll, fellow grand champion Musashimaru (5-2) seemed to find his inner yokozuna, tying up Hayateumi (5-2) at the face-off and then easing the No. 4 maegashira out of the ring for his most convincing win of the tourney.

The troubles at ozeki continued to mar the tournament as Dejima (2-5) and Musoyama (3-4) were victims of upsets, marking the seventh day in a row in which two or more of the holders of sumo's second highest rank were beaten.

Komusubi Kotomitsuki (5-2) threw down Dejima to claim his fourth ozeki scalp of the tourney and previously winless sekiwake Tochinonada turned Musoyama around and shoved him out from behind for his first win.

Ozeki Miyabiyama (5-2), however, got a measure of revenge for an embarrassing loss to Asashoryu in March by bouncing the Mongolian komusubi out of the ring. Asashoryu, losing to his first ozeki of the meet, fell to 4-3.

Ozeki Kaio (4-3), meanwhile, caught Wakanoyama (2-5) square on the chin with his left elbow at the charge for a clean knockout blow that dropped the No. 2 maegashira to his knees.

In an early bout, Mongolia's Kyokushuzan, who had won his first five matches, suffered his second straight loss after getting thrown down by 10th-ranked Aminishiki (4-3).

Wakanoyama out of
summer sumo tourney

TOKYO, May 19 (Kyodo) -- No. 2 maegashira Wakanoyama was knocked out of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on Saturday, following an elbow from ozeki Kaio that left the Musashigawa stable grappler disoriented and with an injured left ankle.

Sumo elder Musashigawa said the 29-year-old Wakanoyama will forfeit Sunday's bout to yokozuna Takanohana and will need about two months to recover from the ligament damage in his left ankle that resulted from his loss to Kaio.

Wakanoyama crumpled to his knees after Kaio hit him square on the chin at the charge of their bout at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan and appeared to have been stunned by the blow.

Doctors at the infirmary at the sumo arena also discovered that the 162-kilogram Wakanoyama injured the ligaments in his ankle, apparently when he fell to the ring's surface.

Takanohana remains
undefeated at 7-0

TOKYO (AP) -- Yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana remained undefeated at 7-0 with two wrestlers closely trailing with one loss on the seventh day of the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo tournament.

Takanohana brushed aside fierce hand thrusts from sekiwake (junior champion) Tochiazuma and calmly pushed him out of the ring to extend his win to 7-0. Tochiazuma fell to 4-3.

Ozeki (champion) Kaio was saved when his opponent, No. 2 maegashira Wakanoyama, slumped to the ground seconds after receiving Kaio's powerful shove at the start of the match. Wakanoyama, now 2-5, limped out of the ring.

Kaio improved to 4-3 but his hopes for a promotion to sumo's highest rank of yokozuna in the next tournament have all but faded, having already suffered three losses in the first half of this tournament.

Kaio won the last tournament in March, and two consecutive championships would have cleared the requirement for promotion to yokozuna.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai kept at the heels of Takanohana with a win over No. 1 maegashira Takanowaka to stand at 6-1. Takanowaka is 2-5.

No. 11 maegashira Higonoumi, 6-1, was dealt his first loss of the tournament by No. 7 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, at Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena in downtown Tokyo. Kyokutenho swiftly slammed down his opponent to improve to 4-3.

The other yokozuna, Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, grabbed the belt of No. 4 maegashira Hayateumi with both hands and walked him out of the ring. Both wrestlers now stand at 5-2.

In other major bouts, ozeki Miyabiyama withstood another assault on higher ranking wrestlers by Mongolian komusubi (junior champion second class) Asashoryu, or Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, by forcing out the challenger. Miyabiyama improved to 5-2 and Asashoryu fell to 4-3.

But another ozeki, Dejima, fell prey to young komusubi Kotomitsuki, who now won four consecutive bouts against Dejima, 2-5. Kotomitsuki, improving to 5-2, has beaten four of five ozekis in this tournament.

Sekiwake Tochinonada, 1-6, scored his first win of the tournament in an upset over ozeki Musoyama, who was spun around and pushed out of the ring from the back. Musoyama fell to 3-4.

Another Mongolian, No. 15 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Batbayar Davaa, crumbled before No. 10 maegashira Aminishiki for his second loss at 5-2. Aminishiki is now 4-3.

In the 26-member juryo division, just below the senior makuuchi division, No. 4-ranked Sentoryu, or American Henry Armstrong Miller, lost to No. 8-ranked Takanotsuru, 4-3. Sentoryu is 2-5.

No. 8-ranked Kuniazuma, or Brazilian Vander Ramos, sealed off attacks from No. 3-ranked Minatofuji, 3-4, to improve to 6-1.

No. 13-ranked Wakaazuma, or Yoshinobu Kuroda from Brazil, lost to makushita -- or the top junior division -- wrestler Tobanoyama, 4-0. Wakaazuma is 1-6.
