Milia Macfarlane and Becky Hogue each had 17 points as top-seeded Punahou routed Roosevelt, 61-29, at Kekuhaupi'o Gym as the Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championships opened last night.

The Buffanblu move on to tonight's second semifinal at the Stan Sheriff Center. Punahou will face the winner of last night's second game between fourth-seeded Baldwin, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, and Aiea, the Oahu Interscholastic Association runnerup.

In last night's other opener, second-seeded Kalaheo downed Waimea, 65-14, at McKinley. The undefeated Mustangs will take on the winner of last night's second game between Big Island champion Honokaa and Iolani at 7 p.m. tonight.

The combination of Macfarlane from beyond the arc and Hogue inside the paint proved to be too much for the Rough Riders. Macfarlane was 5-for-7 in 3-pointers when she wasn't busy finding Hogue underneath the basket.

The height mismatch also hurt Roosevelt as the Rough Riders had no answer for Hogue and Caroline Ane -- both of whom are over 5-foot-10 -- underneath the boards.

Punahou coach Shelley Fey played her entire roster. The Buffanblu bench had 18 points and all but two players scored.

"I'm proud of our 13 players," Fey said. "They all came out and played all the way up to the last second.

"That's been our strength all season long. The girls were all feeling really confident. We all know we can send a lot of girls out there and give our starters a rest but at the same time be able to score with the rest of the group."

Both Hogue and Macfarlane sat out much of the second half since each had at least three fouls.

Macfarlane picked up her third late in the third quarter. She didn't re-enter the game un til the fourth period when she promptly drilled her fifth 3-pointer of the game. On the ensuing play, she picked up her fourth foul and immediately sat back down with 4:52 left in the game.

But, the damage had been done as Punahou held a 49-23 lead and used a 12-6 run to seal the coffin shut on the Rough Riders.

"They (Punahou) really executed well," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "They were really, really sharp. We came out with everything we got. It wasn't a matter of one or two players, they all contributed a little bit."
