If Ricky Bauer was rusty after a two week break, he certainly didn't show it last night as he led Mid-Pacific to a 3-1 win over Pearl City in a quarterfinal game of the Wally Yonamine Foundation State Baseball tournament at Aloha Stadium.

The Owls advanced to today's 1 p.m. semifinal game at Aloha Stadium. They will face Moanalua, which upset fourth-seeded Waiakea 7-6 last night.

In quarterfinal action at Hans L'Orange, Kailua defeated Kauai, 7-5. The undefeated Surfriders will take on St. Joseph's, which upset No. 2 seed Baldwin last night, also at Hans L'Orange Park.

Bauer, who last pitched May 5 against Iolani in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu tournament title game, struck out six Pearl City batters in a complete-game performance. Other than a solo home run by Gavin Concepcion in the bottom of the sixth inning, Bauer didn't allow a runner to reach third base.

"At first I felt a little out of it, but once I started pitching out there it all came back to me and it felt natural again," Bauer said.

The Owls stranded 12 runners on base, but three runs proved to be more than enough for Bauer.

"The first game is always a tough one," said Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru. "We left so many runners on base I was hoping it didn't come back to haunt us. Bauer pitched a great game again."

Mid-Pacific opened the scoring in the third inning, when Kyle Yanabu led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Isaac Omura.

The Owls added to their lead in the fifth on Clint Copulos' run-scoring single which plated Dane Marcouiller. Matt Inouye sealed the game with a solo home run into the left field grandstands in the top of the sixth.

Bauer's only mistake came on his first pitch of the sixth inning, which Concepcion launched over the left field fence for Pearl City's only run.

"We battled, but Bauer was exceptional today with control of his curve ball," said Pearl City coach Mel Seki.

The Owls must now win two games today if they are to win their first state championship since 1992, and if needed, Bauer said he would be available to take the mound again.

"I might have to take some Tylenol or something, but I'll go," Bauer said. "Without a doubt I'll go."
