at WAC meet

From staff and wire reports

FRESNO, Calif. >> It wasn't her personal best, but it was more than enough to make her a champion.

University of Hawaii junior Cheryl Smith won the 10,000-meter race by 42 seconds on the third day of the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships. Smith was timed in 35 minutes, 15.97 seconds.

Hawaii is in sixth place with 16 points. Nevada leads with 71.

"It wasn't my best and I was a little dehydrated,'' Smith said, whose win was worth 10 points. "It was very hot, in the mid-90s.

"I was surprised by how much I won by. I broke away after about 1 1/2 miles, picked it up for a few laps. I expected a closer race.''
