[PET OHANA]

Paws on the Path is an enthusiastic hiking group of canines and their
human companions. They put feet and paws to the paths to explore
Oahu's hiking trails on the last Saturday of each month.

Walking the dog
is good for you, too

By Hawaiian Humane Society

The prescription for revving up your metabolism and improving your attitude is so simple -- take a walk! Getting out there is easier when you have a dog on a leash. Make a date with your dog and you'll both feel great.

The easiest plan is to stroll around your own neighborhood. No excuses!

Venture further to the 35 City & County parks around the island where dogs are allowed on leash. To receive the list, call the Humane Society's publication office at 946-2187, ext. 223.

A favorite spot for fun is an off-leash dog park where dogs run free. Oahu has two off-leash dog parks and the City & County has more in the planning stages. Dogs socialize with each other and the humans are friendly too. Try an afternoon of freedom and your dog will be happily exhausted from playing while you sit under a tree and watch the canine action. The locations are:

>> McInerny Dog Park at the Hawaiian Humane Society, 2700 Waialae Ave.:

Open noon to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends and holidays. This park has a waterfall and pond for dogs so bring a towel. (Note: McInerny is closed today only for lawn maintenance and reopens tomorrow.)

>> Bark Park, Diamond Head Road at 18th Avenue: Open sunrise to sunset everyday.

Another fun activity for two and four feet is to hike with your dog.

The Paws on the Path group, organized by a volunteer of the Hawaiian Humane Society, meets at a different trail each month for hikes that generally begin at 9 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month.

The next hike on May 26 is the five-mile Aiea Loop Trail in Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area. Meet at the parking lot at the top between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. The hike starts at 9 a.m. For more information, call volunteer hike coordinator Sherry Hunt at 625-6285.

Check the calendar of events at the Humane Society's Web site www.hawaiianhumane.org for details about future hikes.

PetWalk in June

PetWalk 2001 entry forms are ready! The pledge donations are the goal of the event, but it's also a purr-fect morning of woof-fun in Kapiolani Park on June 24.

The 11th annual PetWalk will start at 8 a.m. and all people and pets are welcome to join. If your pet is happier at home, you can still enjoy the leisurely two-mile walk.

After the walk there will be pet games including the popular pet costume contest. Fujifilm will be taking instant photo stickers of you and your pet. "Sit and stay" for a picnic lunch in the park starting at 10 a.m.

A special permit allows animals in Kapiolani Park for PetWalk. Call 946-2187, ext. 370 to request a pledge/entry form for PetWalk 2001.

Love-A-Cat Month

In recognition of Love-A-Cat month in June, the Hawaiian Humane Society is giving away 250 coupons for free sterilizations for felines June 1 to 4.

Pick up coupons while they last at Crazy Shirts (Ala Moana, Pearlridge and Haleiwa only) during regular store hours, or sign up at the Humane Society between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. June 1 to 4.

The coupons are for cats or kittens ages 8 weeks or older, and there is a limit of two per family. The surgery will be performed at the Hawaiian Humane Society.
