Some seasons can
really bug you

You can tell seasons in Hawaii not so much by calendar but by bugs.

Palolo had its first termite night earlier this week. The swarming wasn't as heavy as will come later in the summer when the trades die down and the warmer temperatures stir the home-wreaking critters to seek new nestings. Just a few of the winged insects spiraled around the street lights, but their presence signal the start summer.

Black ants also have begun their annual migration indoors in seeming search for water. They are less dependable indicators, however, because during some rainy winter months, they flee the outdoors for drier environments.

Such are the cycles of bugs' lives and the seasons in the islands.
