Nevada pounds
Hawaii ace Coleman

From staff and wire services

RENO, Nevada -- The University of Hawaii Rainbows started fast yesterday, but slowed to a crawl for the final seven innings of their Western Athletic Conference baseball game.

UH starter Jeff Coleman flirted with serious trouble during the first two innings before the University of Nevada Wolf Pack finally took advantage in the third and fourth innings.

Nevada overcame a 4-0 deficit with 11 unanswered runs to win the opener of the three-game series, 11-6.

Four of the eight Nevada runs charged to Coleman were scored by players who walked or were hit by a pitch. The Rainbows didn't have the same advantage as Nevada starter Darrell Rasner walked no one in pitching a complete game.

The Wolf Pack (27-23, 15-16 WAC) loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the first, but Coleman escaped. A pair of singles to start the second resulted in no runs for Nevada.

But a hit batter and walk to start the third came back to haunt Coleman. JaRell McIntyre and Chris Dickerson singled runs home and two more scored on Patrick Scalabrini's throwing error on Joey Herrera's ground ball.

With the score tied at 4-4, the Rainbows (23-25, 10-18 WAC) put runners at first and third with one out in the fourth on singles by Brian Bock and Lane Nogawa. That's when Nevada head coach Gary Powers went to the mound to talk with Rasner.

The sophomore right-hander proceeded to retire the next 10 Rainbows in order. The only UH baserunners after that were Matt Purtell, who singled to open the eighth, and Gregg Omori, who followed with his ninth home run of the season.

The Wolf Pack knocked Coleman out in the sixth inning when they scored four runs. The final two crossed home plate on Herrera's second home run in as many games, the first two in the 5-foot-7, 150-pound second baseman's career.
