UH sailing team wins

The University of Hawaii co-ed sailing team captured the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association's Team Championship in Long Beach, Calif., this past weekend.

UH finished at 11-1. UC Santa Barbara was second at 8-4.

Hawaii, ranked 10th in the national coaches poll, next competes at the ICSARonstan Team Racing North Americans June 3-5 in Boston.

PacWest tennis honors

Hawaii Pacific's Wojtek Bratek, who carries a 4.0 grade point average, was among the 11 men's players named to the Pacific West Conference all-academic team yesterday.

Also named were HPU's Kristian Nielsen (3.87) and Jan Tribler (3.6); Brigham Young-Hawaii's Eddie Merc (3.76) and Logan Woolley (3.55); and Chaminade's Kieran McCartney (3.24).

Lara Hornbuckle of Hawaii-Hilo topped the 16-member women's all-academic tennis team with a 3.95. Also honored were HPUS' Fleurette Miranti (3.59), Bianca Barreto (3.55) and Lisa Blomme (3.45); BYUH's Petra Gaspar (3.36); and Chaminade's Kelly Yamasaki (3.6) and Dayna Sato (3.26).

Witt cited by WAC

UH freshman right-hander Felicity Witt was named the Western Athletic Conference softball Pitcher of the Week yesterday.

Witt went 3-0 last week, including a win in relief over Oklahoma State and consecutive complete-game shutouts over Tulsa. In 1523 innings, she allowed eight hits, struck out 20 with two walks and no earned runs.

WAC honor to Omori

UH junior Gregg Omori was named WAC baseball Player of the Week.

The outfielder-first baseman hit .636 in helping the Rainbows win two of three games last week against Oregon State.

Omori scored four runs and drove in four runs during the series with the Beavers.

Williams gets no-decision

SHREVEPORT, La. >> Jerome Williams was rocked for five runs in three innings last night, but was not charged with the loss as Midland beat Shreveport, 10-5, in a Double-A Texas League baseball game.

Williams, the Swamp Dragons' right-hander from Waipahu who is considered the San Francisco Giants' top minor league pitching prospect, allowed four hits and four walks. He struck out two.

Tennis regional at BYUH

The NCAA Division II West Regional men's and women's tennis tournaments, which will determine the representatives into next week's NCAA national championships, are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Brigham Young-Hawaii courts.

The top-ranked BYUH women's team goes for an unprecedented 100th consecutive victory at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Seasiders (32-0) will face the winner of Friday's 10 a.m. match between Hawaii-Hilo (10-10) and Grand Canyon (12-10).

The No. 2 BYUH men's team (27-2) will play either Cal Poly Pomona or UC San Diego in Friday's final at 2 p.m.

Rainbow golfers eighth

The UH men's golf team was in eighth place heading into today's second round of the WAC Championships yesterday at Broken Arrow, Okla.

No. 12 Texas Christian led the team standings with a 291, two strokes ahead of Tulsa. The Rainbows were at 307.

TCU's Scott Volpitto opened with a 3-under 69 to lead the 54-hole tournament. UH's Russ Nygard was tied for fifth at 73.

Abubo, Kennelly advance

Hawaii's Megan Abubo and Keala Kennelly each won their respective Round One heats yesterday at the Roxy Fiji Surf Jam at Tavarua Island.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard, however, was eliminated by Kate Skarrat of Australia in their heat.
