Engine work stalls Patriot cruise ship at Nawiliwili

NAWILIWILI, Kauai >> The Kauai Visitors Bureau was scrambling to find about 450 hotel rooms late yesterday after the cruise ship SS Patriot experienced engine problems while at the dock at Nawiliwili Harbor.

Unity House consultant charged with tax fraud

A former Unity House consultant pleaded not guilty yesterday to mail fraud, tax evasion and failure to file income tax returns in connection with kickbacks she allegedly received for defrauding the labor organization. U.S. Magistrate Barry Kurren set trial for Roberta Cabral on July 31.

Unity House had funded a TV movie, "Heavenly Road," and had agreed to pay $100,000 more so its workers could be paid union scale wages comparable to movie projects.

According to the indictment, Cabral and former Unity House Executive Director Roderick "Roddy" Rodriguez allegedly persuaded the president of DeFalco West Advertising to pad the movie's budget to hide from the labor organization's board of directors that Cabral would receive a $150,000 kickback. Cabral is also charged with failure to pay taxes in 1992 and 1993.

Carol Gabbard cleared of campaign violations

Board of Education member Carol Gabbard did not violate campaign spending laws in the 2000 election, the state Campaign Spending Commission said. The commission investigated Gabbard after receiving a complaint from Mitchell Kahle, a member of the Civil Unions-Civil Rights Movement.

Kahle had complained that Gabbard failed to claim the use of a Vineyard Boulevard office during her campaign.

The office was the headquarters of the Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values, run by Gabbard's husband.

In a letter to Kahle, the commission stated Gabbard said she did not use the office as a campaign headquarters, and "there does not appear to be a violation of the campaign spending law."
