‘Harbor’ hype
to hit Honolulu

MOVIE maker Disney will stir up national media waves, while locally, Consolidated Theatres' will ride the "Pearl Harbor" movie swell for the grand opening of its Ward 16 Theatre on Auahi Street.

Murata Creative Inc. Marketing & Advertising President Anne Murata said the Esquared advertising agency from Los Angeles is doing the print and radio work, while her agency is doing marketing and promotion of the theater's opening, which includes prize giveaways totaling $100,000.

For three weeks and a $7,000 ad budget, users of America Online will see banner ads and "pop ups" as well as "a splash page we're designing right now," she said.

The ads will steer people to the Ward 16 multiplex for the May 25-27 grand opening.

On May 24, the theater will host a $25 per person benefit for the nonprofit organization "Ready to Learn," which provides school supplies to needy children.

Cancellation official

Frank DeLima's corporate-sponsored annual student transition conventions for this year are canceled -- all 10, on all islands.

Sid Rosen, founder and CEO of convention coordinator Adult Friends for Youth, said final word came from state school superintendent Paul LaMahieu and district superintendents.

Rosen said they "decided that the emphasis would be placed on (classroom) academics for the rest of the semester."

The conventions, for sixth- graders entering intermediate school, are generally considered academic by the schools, DeLima said.

"We feel really terrible about it," Rosen said, "It takes a year to prepare, and it's like a year's worth of work has gone down the drain."

Rosen said he would contact sponsoring businesses which have paid or pledged $2,500 to $5,000 for this year's now-canceled events.
