This is the future site of a Punchbowl Street parking lot.

Buildings removed
for parking lot

The wisenheimers who suggest that this column should be called "Stuff I See While Driving to Work" would be correct this week. There are a couple of lovely Victorian-style cottages on Punchbowl Street across from the delivery entrance of the Pacific Club, and a not-so-lovely blockhouse-style apartment building built in 1961.

In between was a shed-like dwelling that was falling into disrepair.

Recently, it disappeared, as did a cement-block building a few doors down, near the intersection with Vineyard. A check of the tax-key map shows that the property was just purchased by the City and County of Honolulu.

A new mini-park? A red-light district for those uprooted near the convention center? A holding facility for City Council members?

Turns out it's for parking. A tiny parking lot for apartment dwellers in the area who will be displaced by a planned widening of Punchbowl.

The street will have a fourth lane added on the Diamond Head side, cutting through the outer edge of the private properties along there. Which is why stuff along the street is vanishing.

Would have been a good time to bury the utility lines too, hey?
