The Mid-Pacific Owls took a big step toward reclaiming what was once theirs with a 5-3 victory over Kamehameha in the second round of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball tournament yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

Mid-Pacific advances to Wednesday's winners bracket game against Iolani, while Kamehameha will face Pac-Five Tuesday in an elimination game.

The Owls thought they secured a berth in the state tournament last week after clinching the league's regular season title. But with the new eight-team state tournament format providing a spot for only the ILH champion, Mid-Pacific must win the league's double-elimination tournament or beat the tournament champion in a playoff to get a shot at the state title.

"It's been hard all year with a lot of the adversity we've had," said Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru. "So what's one more thing?"

Mid-Pacific took advantage of a shaky start by Kamehameha pitcher Shannon Kahale to score all of its runs yesterday. Run-scoring doubles by Kevin Kahn and Vincent Farkas gave the Owls an early 2-0 lead.

With one out in the third inning, Kahale walked Kahn and Isaac Omura and gave up a single to Dane Marcouiller to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Kahn and Clint Copulos followed with a single to left to score Omura and Marcouiller.

Kahale then settled down to retire 12 of the next 14 batters, giving up just one hit over the final four innings.

"(Kahale) had one bad inning where he couldn't find the plate," said Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie. "A good ball club is going to do that; they're going to take advantage of your mistakes."

Mid-Pacific pitcher Ricky Bauer surrendered 10 hits, but was able to escape several jams.

In the bottom of the seventh inning. Bauer gave up two walks and a two-out RBI single to Hubert Pruett to bring Alika Kuraoka to the plate representing the winning run. But Bauer got Kuraoka to fly out to center field to end the game.

"(Bauer) didn't have his best stuff today," Muramaru said. "But he got the outs when he needed to and made some clutch pitches. He used his experience to get himself out of some jams."
