THE CHURCH OF THE CROSSROADS' minister of music is looking for a few good singers.

No, the choir isn't retiring en masse. Don Conover wants to find all 56 recipients of voice scholarships the church has awarded since 1980, distributing his "most wanted singers" list to island music teachers to do so.

The singers are invited to participate in the "A Gift of Love" concert at 7:30 p.m. May 7 at Church of the Crossroads. The plan is to make the 20th-anniversary event a reunion, as well.

The church has given $55,000 in scholarships and is preparing to audition applicants for the next semester.

Conover has signed some on some alumni, including Joe Laszlo of Hawaii Opera Theatre and Oahu Choral Society; Jan Matuseski, music coordinator at St. Catalina wedding chapel; Nanilisa Pascua, musical director of Diamond Head Theatre's Shooting Stars program; and Hitomi Miyazaki, soloist with Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

Other scholarship winners were: Christie Lawrence, now a member of the Los Angeles Opera Co.; Jamie Offenbach, an opera singer in Europe; Melanie Fuhrmann of the Chicago Symphony Chorus; and Judith Johnson and Joel Garcia, who have released CDs on the mainland.

Scholarship alumni who have made an impact on the Hawaii musical scene include Erik Haines, Hawaii Opera Theatre education manager; Hawaiian recording artist Kalai Stern; and Diane Sunada Koshi, director of the St. Andrew's Priory high school choir, which will participate in the reunion concert.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Crossroads Choir will perform secular and religious choral music, jazz and music from Broadway and Hawaii. Donations will be accepted for the scholarship fund.

Three people currently receiving scholarships of $500 a semester will perform with the Crossroads choir.

"The congregation benefits with the added talent each year, and the students have the opportunity to expand their repertoire and work with a caring and vital group of singers," Conover said.

Scholarship applications are available at the church office, 1212 University Ave., 949-2220, or in the music departments at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, Leeward Community College and Kapiolani Community College.
