The junior college coach of Mark Campbell said yesterday "Hawaii leads" in the recruiting battle for his 6-foot-4 point guard.

Clif Wegner, Campbell's coach at Clackamas (Ore.) CC, said the player enjoyed his recruiting visit to the University of Hawaii last weekend.

"He really liked Hawaii," the coach said. "I heard nothing but good things from him about it. He said he loves the coaching staff. He's still weighing his decision, but something will happen in a day or two, and I think Hawaii leads."

But Wegner was quick to add that Santa Clara and Portland are not out of the picture.

Portland State, Drake and St. Mary's also have shown interest in Campbell. "And Creighton called out of the blue yesterday and offered him a scholarship, sight unseen," Wegner said.

Campbell averaged around 14 points and 10 assists for Clackamas, which went 28-5 and averaged 95 points per game.

"He's a great floor leader and competitor, he distributes and defends," Wegner said. "He's the kind of kid you have to tell to shoot. But he's a good shooter, so we had to design plays for him to shoot. With a different mentality he could have averaged 25 points a game.

"One of the things he liked about Hawaii was all those wing shooters they've got," Wegner said.

Campbell has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Rainbows have used two of their available four scholarships so far, signing forwards LucArthur Vebobe (6-9) and Tony Akpan (6-8) last weekend.

Per NCAA rules, coaches aren't allowed to talk about players they are recruiting.
