The University of Hawaii softball team split another doubleheader last night. But this one wasn't quite as satisfying as those against ranked competition last week.

UH logo April Crowell doubled twice in a season-high eight-run third inning as UH salvaged the second game against Portland State, winning 9-1 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The second game was called in the sixth inning when Stacey Porter singled to center field to score Natalie Gonzales to end it due to the eight-run mercy rule. But the Wahine gave away the opener to the Vikings, 2-1.

Desiree Duran improved to 12-4 with her fifth consecutive victory.

Hawaii is 35-16 and in second place in the Western Athletic Conference at 6-4, and remains a half-game behind conference leader Fresno State. Portland State is 18-23 and third in the WAC at 4-3. The teams meet in another doubleheader today.

UH coach Bob Coolen said the split isn't devastating.

"It does make it tough on us, but if we split tomorrow, I'll really start to worry."

Coolen said he would start Duran in today's first game and possibly the second.

Portland State won the first game, 2-1, thanks to two unearned runs, clutch hitting by Marissa Smith and tough pitching by Morgan Seibert.

Smith drove in both PSU runs with singles after Hawaii errors set the table.

Seibert (13-13) limited UH to two singles and four walks while striking out five. She outdueled Hawaii's Felicity Witt (17-10), who lost her fifth consecutive decision.

Seibert started the seventh-inning go-ahead rally, reaching when first baseman Stacey Porter dropped a throw from Witt after Witt bobbled a shot back at her.

One batter later, Kiauna Anderson doubled to deep center. After a walk and a force out at home, Smith singled to left, scoring Anderson.

The Wahine sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning of the second game, including Crowell who hit a pair of doubles, driving in two runs.
