Buffanblu crush Raiders

WHAT A DIFFERENCE four weeks and a trip to California can make.

Punahou scored a 57-35 girls basketball victory over Iolani last night at the Raiders' gym to remain undefeated in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. But the victory also served as a measuring stick for the Buffanblu.

When the teams last met March 23, the Buffanblu escaped with a 41-39 win at home. The next day they left on a spring break trip to Southern California in which the team picked up three wins and, more importantly, found its identity.

"We beat them only by two and we felt pretty lucky to have gotten by in that game," Punahou coach Shelly Fey said. "(Last night's win) helps us to know where we stand and that we have improved."

Punahou used the inside power of center Becky Hogue and the outside quickness of guards Milia Macfarlane and Elyse Umeda to wear down the Raiders in the rematch. Hogue finished with a game-high 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Becky Hogue hit for 19 points.

"(Hogue) worked really well with the guards," Fey said. "The guards did a great job of getting the ball in to her, they were focusing in on that."

"I was going on a roll. I felt it," Hogue said. "They were going at me right away, and thanks to my teammates I was able to score the points to help us win the game."

Umeda helped spark Punahou with her defensive effort against Iolani guard Monica Tokoro, who was hampered by an ankle injury. Umeda finished with five steals, nine points and six assists, while Macfarlane posted 12 points.

"Elyse has been one of the key players for us," Fey said. "She does it on both ends. She anticipates real well, she's so quick and she finishes on the other end. She helps us in creating a lot of offensive opportunities as well as putting a lot of pressure on defense."

Despite the injury to her left ankle, Tokoro played most of the game and finished with eight points. Trisha Nishimoto led the Raiders with nine points.

After an even first quarter, the Buffanblu went on a 15-2 run early in the second period to take command. Hogue and forward Caroline Ane combined for eight points during that stretch, and Macfarlane capped the run with a 3-pointer.

"What they did was perfect," said Iolani coach Glenn Takara. "They pounded it in when they could. They made us run when they had to. They just made us defend the whole court."

Kamehameha 47, Maryknoll 31:

The Warriors turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter to recover from a slow start and pull away from the Spartans.

After trailing 12-8 after the first quarter, Kamehameha outscored Maryknoll 17-3 in the second to take control.

"We just didn't play smart defense (in the first quarter)," said Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett. "We had to put a little more pressure on ... and that created some opportunities for us."

Megan Ching led the Warriors with 18 points and Tai Soo added 12. But Cockett credited the play of Ashley Ruff as a key to the victory.

"She was most effective for us with her rebounding and putbacks," Cockett said. "It kept us in the game in the first quarter and she sustained her good rebounding throughout the game."
