‘Odd Couple’
reunites Moore
and Sajak

THE always perfectly dressed and even more perfectly coifed Joe Moore a slob? That's what people taking in a production of "The Odd Couple" at the Hawaii Theatre in September will be asked to believe. And who'll be the neat freak in the mix but "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak, an old military buddy of Moore from Vietnam days. The two promise to make an odd coupling on stage to be sure, with Moore as sportswriting slob Oscar Madison and Sajak as compulsive cleaner-upper Felix Unger. TV anchorman Moore began his TV career writing and delivering sports reports, and Sajak has been watching contestants clean up for years, so perhaps it's not such an odd coupling after all. Still, the two have their work cut out making people forget the TV couple, Jack Klugman and Tony Randall or the film's Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. I saw the original couple when the show opened on Broadway in 1965, and Oscar and Felix, no matter how many productions I see, will always be Matthau and Art Carney...

THE East-West Center's exhibit of "Carved Puppets of Asia" attracted more than 1,000 visitors. The Oahu run is over, but Arts Program coordinator William Feltz says the exhibit will travel later this year to the Lyman House Museum in Hilo and then to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center ... Then there's the Sounds of Aloha's barbershop quartet songfest April 27 & 28. You have to love the title: "Political Harmony (A Musical Oxymoron)." ... Restaurateur Ed Greene has not only opened his Jameson's Seafood Grill in Restaurant Row, but also Danny's Plate Lunch, a fast food window, at the Row. Jameson's manager is Peter Dietrich, late of Indigo and Maharaja, the chef is Ron Ko, formerly with Jameson's Haleiwa and the old Territorial Tavern...

Strikes are good

NO, we're not talking about the now settled UHPA strike or the teacher's strike, which is guaranteed to leave nobody completely satisfied. We're talking about the strikes which will come about at the April 24 fund-raiser for Sen. Donna Mercado Kim. It's being held in a bowling alley, you see, and for a $25 campaign contribution those attending get the use of bowling shoes, a ball and one free game. The event is called "Rock-N-Roll at Kalihi Bowl." ...

YOU don't have to wear glasses to have great vision, and Mayor Jeremy Harris is welcoming all who consider themselves visionaries to attend the islandwide vision project called "Sustainable Island" beginning tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center. Everyone is welcome, even if they've never attended a vision meeting, and perhaps help plan their grandchildren's future...

The weakest link

YOU can understand why the TV quiz show, "The Weakest Link," is a hit in Great Britain, where students are accustomed to the type of stern taskmaster host Anne Robinson portrays on the show, dismissing contestants one by one with a curt, "You are the weakest link. Goodbye." But I'll be surprised if it reaches that kind of popularity in America. Imagine Robinson in Hawaii, sniping at some Waianae pig farmer, "You are the weakest link. Goodbye." She just might find herself making an unscheduled guest appearance on "E.R." ...
