CEO Dods’
e-vasion on the ’Net

BANCWEST CORP. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Walter Dods declined to answer a question during a Web broadcast conference call with securities analysts Wednesday. He was asked a question about interest levels on deposit accounts, but "e-vaded" the issue.

He demurred out of concern the competition might be listening in, and stopped to wish a cheery, "Hi guys," to other isle banks tuned into the stream.

Unusual theater feature

Consolidated Theatres' new Ward 16 multiplex is being built with a surfboard and skateboard lockup, for those who travel to the movies in something other than a motorized vehicle. It's believed to be a first in Hawaii.

Another possible first for a Hawaii movie venue is the concierge available for patrons wanting dining reservations at nearby restaurants. That is, for those who don't fill up on popcorn, which will be freshly popped behind the 100-foot-long concession counter. For several years, popcorn served at most Consolidated theaters was popped off-property at its warehouse near Sand Island. A "second" for Consolidated, is that the new Ward 16 Theatre will offer Pink's Hot Dogs, as does the Mililani 14 complex.

Star-Bulletin writer Tim Ryan, who toured the still-under construction site, said he used to deliver the "Hollywood Citizen News," to the Pink's Hot Dog stand at the corner of Melrose and LaBrea in Hollywood.

The famous hot dog stand became so because it was a magnet for movie stars, he said.

"I used to see Natalie Wood, Marlon Brando, Mamie Van Doren -- I even saw Frank Sinatra there once," Ryan said.

In Ryan's delivery days, the newspaper cost 25 cents. Pink's customers paid 25 cents for a hot dog and 10 cents for a soft drink. Ryan said once in high school the stand was a regular Friday night stop. "It was one of those things where one hot dog was plenty, because there was so much chili on them," he said.
