Rainbows batter
Horned Frogs, 11-4

From staff and wire reports

FORT WORTH, Texas >> The University of Hawaii unveiled a power game yesterday to defeat Texas Christian, 11-4, in the opener of a three-game Western Athletic Conference baseball series.

With two outs in the first inning, Gregg Omori belted the first pitch he saw from TCU starter Chris Bradshaw over the left-field wall for the first of three Hawaii home runs in the game. The Rainbows added another run in the first on Danny Kimura's RBI single and never trailed.

The Rainbows also ripped five doubles, giving them eight extra base blows out of the 14 hits they collected off three Horned Frog pitchers.

Kimura and Brian Bock, who was 4-for-5 and scored four runs, also sent balls well over the left-field fence in the seventh inning.

"The wind was blowing out and it helped a little bit, but I think all three would have made it anyway," UH acting head coach Carl Furutani said.

Patrick Scalabrini doubled and scored in the first inning. Omori doubled home a run in the fifth inning as UH took a 4-1 lead.

Bock doubled and scored on Arthur Guillen's double in the sixth. Guillen later scored on Omori's two-run single. Tim Montgomery's double to the left-center field gap brought in the final two UH runs in the ninth inning.

Six of the Rainbow (18-20, 8-14 WAC) runs scored after two were out in an inning.

The victory was the first on the road for the 'Bows this season. It was just the second win in 13 WAC games in the Lone Star state over three seasons, but the second consecutive over TCU here.

The Horned Frogs (23-17, 13-8) managed 12 hits off UH starter Jeff Coleman. The series continues with a game today at 10:05 a.m.

Bulldogs topple Vulcans

HILO >> Hawaii-Hilo knocked Fresno State pitching ace Zach Minor out early, but couldn't hold on to a 5-0 lead at Francis Wong Stadium yesterday.

The Bulldogs tied the score at 5 in the ninth, then scored two runs in the 10th to sweep the three-game WAC series with a 7-5 victory.

Casey McGehee's two-out single ignited FSU's winning rally.

Doubles by Darren Chu and Justin Kaneshiro and Kaliko Oligo's run-scoring groundout gave the Vulcans (5-29, 3-19) a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

But Ozzie Gonzalez allowed Hilo just four hits over the last 61/3 innings as FSU improved to 28-16 and 12-9.

Sea Warriors routed

SAN JOSE, Calif. >> San Jose State exploded for a season-high 30 hits and routed Hawaii Pacific, 27-3, in a non-conference baseball game yesterday at Blethen Field.

The Sea Warriors (18-24) scored two runs off Spartans starter Tim Adinolfi in the top of the first inning, but San Jose State (20-15-1) came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Spartans scored seven runs in the second to break open the game.

Wahine trip Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. >> Bob Coolen isn't ready to predict that his team will jump into the Top 25, but the UH softball coach feels he got the attention of at least one pollster this weekend.

Hawaii completed a split of its four-game series at No. 15 Fresno State yesterday, winning the finale, 4-0, behind Desiree Duran's second shutout in as many days against FSU.

FSU won yesterday's first game, 2-1, in 11 innings as Becky Witt singled in the winning run off UH's Felicity Witt. Fresno's biggest crowd of the season -- 2,326 -- saw the doubleheader.

The Wahine (34-15, 5-3) remain a half game behind the Bulldogs (31-15, 6-3) in the WAC after winning their first two games ever at Fresno.

UH returns home today after completing a road trip in which it split six games against ranked opposition.

Bulldogs coach Margie Wright votes in the NFCA/USA Today poll.

"I think she knows we have a good team now," Coolen said. "Hopefully she'll do the right thing as the WAC representative and vote for us."

Hawaii, 29th in last week's voting, might not jump into the rankings just yet. But Duran (11-4) appears to have a good chance to be named WAC Pitcher of the Week after giving up only two runs in 21 innings in beating No. 18 Pacific and then shutting out FSU twice.

The senior left-hander pitched a three-hitter yesterday, striking out one and walking one.

Support came in a four-run second inning, with RBI hits by Sheri Oronoz, Natalie Gonzales, Tyree Woodruff and Stacie Hirano.

UH wins in water polo

LONG BEACH, Calif. >> The University of Hawaii women's water polo team finished the Long Beach State Invitational undefeated with three wins yesterday.

The Wahine (18-7) rallied to beat the host 49ers, 6-5, in overtime. UH also defeated UC Irvine, 10-5, and Cal Baptist, 12-6.

Seasiders top 'Swords

The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team swept Chaminade, 2-1 and 4-3, in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday.

In the first game, Marie Maese doubled in Maggie Reynolds in the bottom of the 10th for the Seasiders' victory.

BYUH (17-30, 11-14) took a 4-0 lead in the second, but the Silverswords closed to 4-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Reliever Lyndi Frei earned the save, getting the last CU batter to pop out.

HPU, Hilo split

Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo split a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans (23-17, 10-8) won the opener, 4-1, as Trisha Holley drove in three runs to defeat the Sea Warriors for the first time this season.

HPU rebounded for a 2-1 win in the second game behind RBI-singles by Ashelle Acosta and Brandy Choy Foo.
