McGaughy
stifles Punahou

Travis McGaughy's name may be hard to spell, but last night he was even tougher to hit.

The Iolani senior right-hander pitched a two-hitter to lead the Raiders to a 6-0 win over Punahou at Ala Wai Field. Iolani improved to 7-3 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball race, while Punahou fell to 7-4.

McGaughy struck out four batters and threw just 82 pitches in the complete game performance.

"I felt good in the warm-up and I just did the best I could," McGaughy said. "Mixing my speeds was a real key factor. I come with my fastball and throw ... something a little bit slower than my fastball and that kept them off balance."

Iolani broke it open with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning, highlighted by Brad Takamori's three-run double down the left field line.

"When you get a five-run lead it's a world of difference on the mound," McGaughy said. "So I have to thank them for getting me that lead."

Mid-Pacific 7, Maryknoll 1: Ryan Basco pitched six strong innings as the Owls snapped the Spartans' three-game winning streak. Ryan Inouye drove in two runs and scored two more to ensure the Owls didn't become Maryknoll's fourth upset victim.

"They were ready today," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said. "I think those three wins really made them more aware of this team."

After giving up a run in the first, Basco surrendered just four hits over the next five innings and benefited from a couple of baserunning miscues by the Spartans. Despite the loss, Maryknoll coach Duane Eldredge felt his team had earned the respect of the league with its recent success.

"I know Mid-Pac was not going to take us lightly," he said. "There was an adjustment on their end, you could see it when they arrived at the field. To me that's a win for these boys, because people don't do that with us."
