HPU loses
to Sonoma St.

Sonoma State pounded out 18 hits to overwhelm Hawaii Pacific, 12-1, in a nonconference baseball game at Sonoma, Calif.

HPU starting pitcher Peter Sonier gave up nine hits and eight runs in the first 123 innings. The Sea Warriors prevented a shutout with a run in the seventh.

The Sea Warriors (18-22) and Cossacks (28-10) meet again today at 1 p.m.

Gauchos defeat Wahine

With less than two minutes left in the fourth overtime, Erin Lezak scored the only goal of the game to lead the No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team over fifth-ranked Hawaii, 9-8, yesterday in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Wahine led 4-1 after the first quarter. The Gauchos rallied with four unanswered goals in the second period.

Hawaii fell to 13-7 overall, 1-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Wahine compete in the Long Beach State Tournament today and tomorrow.

BYUH names Ferguson

Aukai Ferguson has been hired as the coach of the Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team which begins competition this fall.

The 1986 Kahuku High graduate played collegiately at Loyola Marymount and Chaminade. In 1994, he founded the Kahuku High water polo program and helped initiate the public high school league on Oahu. From 1994-99, he coached the Red Raiders to five consecutive undefeated public high school championships and two straight undefeated public high school girls' titles.

J.O. boxing tomorrow

National Junior Olympics (age 14-15) bronze medalists Glenn Miyose and Ronald Cordeiro of Waianae are scheduled to be in action tomorrow night at Waianae Gym in the Hawaii State Junior Olympics on Saturday at 7 p.m. Their opponents and weight classes have yet to be determined.

Admission is $7 for the card which will feature 8-to-10 bouts, state Junior Olympic co-chairman Bruce Kawano said.

Sony Open gives back

The Friends of Hawaii Charities and Charity Partner, The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, gifted $600,000 to 83 Hawaii charities and not-for-profit organizations through its main event, the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Sony Open champion Brad Faxon added a $10,000 contribution.

Teachers Night at HMS

Hawaii Motor Speedway is waiving the $7 admission fee for teachers on strike who want to attend tomorrow's races.

Public school teachers need to bring either their HSTA or faculty membership cards. University of Hawaii faculty members need their UHPA card or faculty card.

The 2nd Easter Egg Extravaganza, featuring sprint car and stock car racing, is scheduled tomorrow. The special promotion is an Easter egg hunt at 6:30 p.m. for children, ages 12 and under.

Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors (55-older) and juniors (11-17), and $3 for kids (6-10).

Coach clinic postponed

Due to the state teachers' strike, the NFLNFF coaching clinic, scheduled for today and tomorrow at the University of Hawaii, has been postponed.

Seasiders net wins

The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team concluded its regular season Wednesday with wins over Albertson and Chaminade in Laie.

The Seasiders (32-0) ran their national-best winning streak to 99, defeating Albertson's 5-4 and Chaminade, 8-1.

The third-ranked BYUH men also defeated Albertson, 7-2, and Chaminade, 9-0, Wednesday to improve to 27-2.

Vulcans sign three

The University of Hawaii-Hilo has signed one basketball and two softball players this week.

Derek Mgbeke, a 6-foot-3 forward from Los Angeles City College joins the Vulcans basketball team. He averaged nearly 12 points and 9 rebounds this past season.

California junior college transfers Wendy Layton and Kelly Moore join the softball team. Layton was an all-American outfielder for Shasta Community College where she batted .360 last season; Moore is an all-American infielder from San Joaquin Delta College, batting .423.
