Athletes of the Week

BOYS

>> Hubert Pruett, Kamehameha baseball: Struck out 10 batters in a complete-game performance against St. Louis on Saturday. He also hit a home run in a losing cause.

GIRLS

>> Ruby Carillo, Aiea basketball: Helped ease the loss of two starters to injuries by tallying 15 points, 18 rebounds and three blocks in two games last week.



Honor Roll

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

>> Kylee Nakamura, Aiea: Amassed 15 points, seven assists and five steals for the Na Alii last week.

>> Becky Hogue, Punahou: Scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Buffanblu's victory over Kamehameha on April 6.

BASEBALL

>> Peter Phillips, Punahou: Tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout against Damien on Saturday.

>> Chad Bailey, Campbell: Struck out 11 batters in a 7-1 victory over Nanakuli on April 5.

>> Ian Matsuda, Kaiser: Stole three bases in a win over Kalani on April 5.

>> Cody Seminara, Maryknoll: Tossed six shutout innings Friday to lead the Spartans to an upset of Kamehameha.

GOLF

>> Pila Young, Mid-Pacific: Carded a round of 77 to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu junior varsity championship April 3 at the Kalakaua Golf Course.

TRACK AND FIELD

>> Todd Iacovelli, Punahou: The junior anchored two winning relay teams at last week's ILH meet -- the 4x800 meters and the distance medley.

NOW YOU KNOW

>> Hilo is the only Big Island team to win a state baseball championship. The Vikings beat Roosevelt, 11-10, in the 1985 title game.



Back in the Day

April 12, 1969

>> Punahou pole vaulter Danny Deacon becomes the first Hawaii high school athlete to clear 14 feet. The junior broke his own state record by soaring 14 feet, 5-1/2 inches in the Private School's Track and Field meet at Alexander Field.



Strike Watch

>> So far, the HSTA strike has claimed 18 OIA baseball and 21 OIA girls basketball games.
