Shannon Tabion's work in the pitcher's circle helped Baldwin win its first state softball championship in February.

Her dominance in 15 regular and postseason games has also earned her the Star-Bulletin Softball Player of the Year award.

The Star-Bulletin selected its all-stars after consultation with coaches from around the state.

The senior pitcher went 12-0 in the Maui Interscholastic League, and then pitched all 22 innings of the Bears' three wins in the state tournament.

"She's got the complete package," Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro said. "She has velocity and a lot of ball movement, on her riser and her drop. She locates pitches well and she's mentally tough. She doesn't give in even when she falls behind (in the count)."

Tabion's performance in the state tournament cemented her spot as the state's premier pitcher.

On three consecutive nights, Tabion downed the Oahu Interscholastic Association's second-place team (Pearl City) and the top two teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (Iolani and Kamehameha). In those 22 scoreless innings, she struck out 35.

"It's always fun to catch her because she hits all her spots when they need to be hit," Bears catcher Ashlyn Russell said. "Her pitching gives (us) confidence."

Russell joins Tabion on the first team, along with Baldwin shortstop Kaleo Eldredge. Bears coach Ryan Souza, who took the head coaching reins from his father, Rudy, is the Coach of the Year.

Eldredge, a senior, was a first-team All-State selection last year and is headed to the University of California in the fall on a softball scholarship.

"She's an oustanding, motivated softball player," Hilo coach Walter Carvalho said. "Every coach can only wish for someone like her."

Said Shimabukuro: "Kaleo is the ultimate competitor. She would do whatever it took for her team to win. She's very smart, athletic, gutsy, and she has the tools."

Russell, also a senior, handled all the heat Tabion threw at her.

"We could not have won a championship without her," Souza said. "She was always very talented, always an All-State type of player, in my mind."

Iolani, which had its run of consecutive state crowns stopped at two by Baldwin in the semifinals, has four players on the first team, including pitcher and slugger Ianeta Lei. She was phenomonal on the mound -- pitching a no-hitter against Baldwin in the state tournament -- and at the plate -- hitting .400, with 20 RBIs.

First baseman Taryn Nagata, infielder Noelle Izumi and outfielder Stacey Higa also made the first team for Iolani.

Kamehameha, which lost to Baldwin, 1-0, in the title game, has three players on the first team, led by ace pitcher Leo Sing Chow.

Slugging outfielder Talia Ruth and designated hitter Brandi Peiler join her.

Outfielder Britney Shimamoto and infielder Tiari Keliinoi, both of Mililani, and utility player Shelly Featheran round out the first team.

Featheran of Kailua was the Surfriders' top pitcher during the regular season. She also played center field.

Two members of the All-State first team -- Tabion and Izumi -- made verbal commitments last week to accept softball scholarships at the University of Hawaii.
