Producers hide
big secret at KHON

KHON TV morning show producers Robyn Nishi and Lance Kuraoka can be congratulated for several reasons.

They kept a secret in a newsroom for two years; they got married on April Fool's Day; and upon returning to work and announcing the nuptials, most were convinced it was merely an April Fool's joke made more credible by a Web page of wedding photos -- http://hometown.aol.com/waiolilani/guesswho.html.

According to a friend who asked to remain anonymous, "nobody even knew they were a thing."

KHON News Director Jim McCoy said their relationship wasn't a complete secret. "We knew they were close but we didn't know they were this close," he said.

The new Mrs. Kuraoka said, "(morning show anchors) Kirk (Matthews) and Leslie (Wilcox) thought it was an April fool's joke, but some co-workers believed us and said 'congratulations.'"

Nishi said by about noon Tuesday the reality sunk in with most people in the newsroom, who make it their business to uncover secrets. "We know how they work, we work with them and know our way around it," Nishi said.

She also said she and her now-husband didn't make a big deal about the romantic nature of their personal lives.

"We just thought that because it was at work -- we should keep it professional."

On that personal level however, Nishi said, "We worked well as team at work, why not make it something we do for the rest of our lives?"

Kuraoka said they couldn't take off on a honeymoon right away because of the then-impending teachers' strike.

"Our lives revolve around work more or less," he said, but added, "it's been a nonstop honeymoon already."

Lest he give the impression of being a hopeless romantic, Kuraoka said his other choice for a wedding day was Halloween.
