State Hospital patient escapes by window again

A Hawaii State Hospital patient escaped for the second time in two weeks early yesterday, police said.

Leonard Moore, 35, escaped around 2:40 a.m. by throwing a television set through a window.

He was last seen running off the hospital grounds toward Kahekili Highway.

Moore first escaped from the hospital on March 28 when he threw a table through a window to make his getaway.

Extra day scheduled for mercury disposal

The state health department and the city are coordinating an additional drop-off day for homeowners to dispose of mercury and hazardous wastes. The City Department of Environmental Services schedules drop-off days every three months, but April 28 has been added due to "recent publicity about mercury contamination," Mayor Jeremy Harris said.

The last drop-off was March 17 and the is in June. For more information, call the city's Household Hazardous Waste Information Line at 523-4474.

Mokuleia police search for knife, gun suspect

Police were looking for a man who cut another man in the neck with a knife and fired three shots in Mokuleia Saturday morning.

Police said a fight broke out among 40 people at a military beach located across Dillingham Airfield at about 12:30 a.m. A man suffered a minor wound across the left side of his neck with an exacto knife, police said.

The suspect then allegedly fired approximately three rounds at another man, but missed.

Victim in auto accident wore seat belt, no air bag

Speed may have been a factor in a head-on collision that killed a 68-year-old Ewa Beach man and injured a 24-year-old Waialua man Friday morning. The injured man was upgraded to serious.

The crash occurred on Wilikina Drive at 6:10 a.m. when the 1988 Toyota Corolla driven by the 68-year-old man crossed the center line and hit a 1998 Ford Ranger truck.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, however, the 68-year-old man's vehicle was not equipped with air bags.

Fire department will keep searching for man

The fire department was expected to resume a search this morning for a 41-year-old Oahu man who was last seen jumping into the ocean at the Lanai Lookout near Hanauma Bay Friday morning.

Firefighters found the man's wallet floating in the water yesterday after they began searching at about 5:30 p.m.
