Hitting the wall
on a marathon deal

SAY what you will about women in cars -- every so often they do things that perpetuate the cliché that they're lousy drivers. Take real estate woman Anne Perry of Coldwell Banker. Please! She was with a big client Tuesday, having just helped him to buy a $2 million home and is now conferring with him about buying more. They'd finished their most recent strategy session, Perry was backing out of his new driveway and -- wham! -- rammed into his wall. The guy turned out to be a gem (and a gent) about it, and fortunately Realtor Penny Bradley still had faith in her driving. She was nice enough to loan Perry her car so she could get around for the rest of the day ... Coldwell Banker, incidentally, is the corporate sponsor enabling Diamond Head Theatre to stage "Steel Magnolias." They also sponsored a pre-opening performance that contained a varied audience of mostly women, many of whom would seem to fit right into the gossipy beauty parlor ambiance of the play: Rep. Barbara Marumoto, former beauty queen Nadine Tanega (now Nadine Hogan), Flora Dec craft guru Lisa Kaneshiro and many more ...

IN town from Kotzebue, Alaska, is Tlingit Indian Walter Porter, who talked about "Mythology in Today's World" at the National Association for Interpretation spring workshop at the Ala Moana Hotel. Porter has been to Hawaii before. In fact, he was once a stand-in for Jack Lord, and wanted to pass along a "hello" to Marie Lord, Jack's widow, whom he describes as "a gracious and lovely lady."...

Banzais and Anzais

IT came as something of a surprise to some, but it was one of those "only in Hawaii" moments. Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Moon, who is of Korean ancestry, officiated at the wedding ceremony of Susan Gochros to former deputy attorney general Presley Pang, and recited the prayers in perfect Hebrew. Gochros is Jewish, as was Pang's former wife, Susan Horowitz. The newlyweds performed a Chinese tea ceremony for their parents, and Judge Walter Kirimitsu and Russell Suzuki toasted the attendees at the Oahu Country Club with Japanese banzais. Attorney General Earl Anzai and three previous attorneys general -- that's how you say it, folks -- helped toast the couple. And now that Pang is at UH, his office is across the street from Susan No. 1, Horowitz. And believe it or not, Pang wasn't named for Elvis, but a family friend. Only in a state as diverse as Hawaii could this story be possible...

Svetin lovely

SINCE leaving the Ritz-Carlton Maui to return to the Seattle area with husband Todd, public relations exec Kimberly Svetin has unpacked more than 200 boxes of their belongings. Now Svetin has set about looking for a job, and reports that Kinko's, where she works on her resume, is her new favorite retail outfit. She has new "best friends," Greg and Jerry from Lowe's Hardware where she goes five times a week, and the ladies at the return counter at Target, which she visits each morning to return things she bought the day before. One thing she doesn't have to return is skim milk, which she buys for $3.85 at Costco. That's TWO gallons for $3.85, which almost makes the move worthwhile...
