The parents of a minor girl who contends she was raped by four members of the Kalaheo football team have filed a lawsuit against Department of Education officials and her alleged attackers.

Besides the alleged attackers, who are minors, the defendants named in the suit filed yesterday in Circuit Court include head football coach Michael Akiu, Kalaheo Principal James Schlosser and Athletic Director Lee Cashman.

The complaint alleges the girl was sexually assaulted on Nov. 11 at a camp attended by the football team at Bellows Air Force Base beach.

The complaint alleges that Akiu, who organized the camp, was present at the camp when the incident occurred and was negligent in supervising or controlling the boys.

The suit also said the students drank large quantities of beer at the camp and that Akiu should have known young girls came to the camp to mingle with members of his team.

Cashman and Schlosser should have known about the camp and negligently failed to supervise Akiu and the four boys, the suit said.

Akiu and Kalaheo High School officials could not be reached for immediate comment.

Greg Knudsen, Department of Education spokesman, said the department could not comment on legal matters that are before the court.
