NEW JOBS

>> George Leong has been named assistant vice president of the commercial real estate loan division at American Savings Bank. He was also named a commercial real estate loan officer for the bank. Prior to joining American Savings, Leong was a trust officer for Pacific Century Trust.

>> Nancye L. Bethurem, Douglas A. Codiga and David M. Forman have joined the Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing law firm. Bethurem was legal adviser on environmental matters to the Army in Hawaii and past chair of the Natural Resources Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association. Codiga has a practice in environmental litigation and compliance and general civil litigation. He co-wrote The Hawaii Environmental Law Handbook. Forman's specialty is in environmental and native rights litigation. He practiced law for the Native Hawaiian Legal Corp. and serves as executive director for the Hawaii Appleseed Public Interest Law Center.

>> Karla Merry has been named project manager for workers' compensation software development at Island Insurance Cos. She is a certified professional disability manager, one of four individuals in the state to earn the certification. Before joining Island Insurance, Merry worked as a workers' compensation claims manager for Acclamation Insurance Management Services.

PROMOTIONS

>> Lynell Totoki has been named communications coordinator at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Hawaii. Totoki was promoted from assistant to the director of sales, where she started at the resort in 1999. In her new role, Totoki will serve as liaison to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group's corporate offices and will aid the resort's communications department.

RECOGNITION

>> Wallace S. Miyahira, Leslie S. "Les" Murakami and Alfred A. Yee were recently inducted into the Saint Louis School Gallery of Distinguished Achievers.

Miyahira, Saint Louis class of 1950, is a director and former president of the Oahu Residential and Commercial Operations of Castle & Cooke Inc. A former Saint Louis trustee, Miyahara serves on the board of the Honolulu Symphony, the Metropolitan YMCA, and the Land Research Foundation of Hawaii.

As the head baseball coach at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 1970, Murakami, Saint Louis class of 1954, led the Rainbows to Western Athletic Conference championships, the NCAA regionals and the College World Series.

Yee, of Applied Technology Corp., Saint Louis class of 1943, is an inventor and pioneer in structural engineering and the construction industry. He holds numerous patents on devices for construction and structural framing systems.

Bishop Stephen J. Alencastre and George J. Helm Jr. were honored posthumously by the school. Alencastre, Saint Louis class of 1894, was active in the education and helping with the problems of Hawaii's youth, as well as the labor movement. An accomplished musician, Helm, Saint Louis class of 1968, was dedicated to Hawaiian issues. In 1977, he and a companion set forth on their surfboards for Kahoolawe and were lost at sea.
