Learn to make authentic Hawaiian lei in free class

The Department of Parks and Recreation will offer a free Hawaiian lei-making workshop 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at Waimanalo District Park on Hihimanu Street.

Step-by-step techniques for crafting hili, haku, wili, humupapa, kui and kipuu lei will be shown at the annual workshop.

To learn the traditional methods of lei making, bring your own green foliage, flowers with 3-inch-long stems, raffia and clippers or scissors.

Teen hiking Manoa Falls rescued by firefighters

Firefighters rescued an injured teenager from the Manoa Falls Trail yesterday afternoon.

The 14-year-old boy cut his knee on a rock about a mile in on the trail and was bleeding heavily when firefighters were called.

The bleeding had lessened when firefighters arrived at about 3 p.m. The boy was carried out and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Palama Street lane closure will stall traffic

Motorists who use Palama Street as their route to or from the H-1 freeway can expect to be slowed down next week.

The right makai-bound lane of Palama Street will be closed 24 hours a day, Monday through April 8 from Likelike Elementary School's driveway to Vineyard Boulevard.

Metcalf Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today for waterline work.

The state Department of Transportation advisory on continuing roadwork projects pinpointed other lane closures and detours.

Lanes or ramps on H-1 between the Pali overpass and Kapiolani interchange, and Kapiolani Boulevard on- and offramps, will be closed 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. tomorrow through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow through Friday.

Other projects planned this week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. are:

>> The Old Waialae Road onramp to eastbound H-1 will be closed.

>> Traffic through the area of Kapahulu and Harding avenues will be detoured and turns prohibited.

>> One lane of Kalanianaole Highway at Analii Street will be closed.

>> The Lunalilo offramp from westbound H-1 continues to be closed weekdays, and the Lunalilo onramp to westbound H-1 will be closed Wednesday.

>> Lunalilo Street will have lane closures and detours.

Big Isle police officer charged with abuse

HILO >> Big Island police arrested a 38-year-old Kau patrol officer Friday and charged him with domestic abuse stemming from two separate incidents.

Warren Ke was arrested by detectives of the Kona Domestic Violence Unit. A 20-year-old woman who lives at Hawaiian Ocean View Estates reported to police that Ke had twice assaulted her. She told police Ke had prevented her from reporting it to investigators.

Ke was charged with two counts of abuse of a family or household member, one count of hindering prosecution and one count of unlawful imprisonment.

Ke was held in the Kona police cellblock Friday night in lieu of $8,000 bail.

Woman injured in crash on Punahou Street

A 34-year-old Honolulu woman was in critical condition after the car she was driving crossed the center of Punahou Street, jumped the curb and hit a rock wall near Punahou School near Nehoa Street at 4:30 a.m. yesterday, police said.

The woman was not wearing her seat belt, police said. Her passenger, a 31-year-old Honolulu man who was apparently wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries, police said.

Police seek male suspect in brutal robbery at HCC

CrimeStoppers and the police are asking for the public's help in finding a man who robbed a 76-year-old man at 2 p.m. March 18 in front of Honolulu Community College's administration building.

The suspect approached the victim from behind and punched him repeatedly in the head, police said.

He then ripped the victim's rear pants pocket, took his wallet and fled.

The suspect, who is in his mid-30s, is believed to frequent the campus and the Pua Lane area.

He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing between 180 and 200 pounds, with a husky build.

He has short black hair a little over the ears. He was seen wearing a dirty yellowish T-shirt, light-colored shorts and black slippers.
