Excellence: Today’s
goal for Sunday

Good morning!

The last time the Today department was able to say that on a Sunday was back in 1992, when our feature section was inserted into Hawaii Newspaper Agency's product.

It's great to be back, and I confess, a little scary. You see, after years of enviously eyeing the competition, itching to do better, the time has come to put up. And we're starting from scratch with our new Sunday magazine, Mauka Makai.

I warn you now it is a work in progress and the last month has been marked by a barrage of paper, e-mailed jpegs and frantic phone calls, but the dream is coalescing.

The goal is outright seduction, to engage hearts and minds with tales about life in contemporary and old Hawaii, the colorful characters who populate our streets, news from the worlds of music, literature and the arts, and portfolios showcasing the work of our photographers and contributing artists.

The aim is high, but regular readers know it won't all be highbrow. My staff is a little too irreverent for that.

Some of our weekday columnists are contributing to the Sunday package, including "Honolulu Lite" humorist Charles Memminger, three-dotter Dave Donnelly, and Suzanne Tswei, who exits her Saturday garden to check out what's going on in the art galleries.

We've borrowed MidWeek editor Don Chapman, too. He's providing a synopsis to his "My Kind of Town" fiction series.

And for those who whined about the "easy" weekday crossword puzzle, we're offering a challenge in the form of the New York Times crossword puzzle.

Sunday is a day for contemplation and reflection, so we invite you to polish off those pancakes, sit back and relax in your favorite chair, put your feet up and enjoy.
