Punahou snaps
Iolani streak

Punahou scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning and held off an Iolani rally to hand the Raiders their first loss of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball season, 4-3, yesterday at Iolani field.

The Buffanblu improved to 4-1 with the win, and Iolani fell to 5-1. Both teams will have to recover quickly from the extra-inning inning affair as Punahou takes on Pac-Five today at Ala Wai Field, while Iolani closes the first half of the ILH season with a game at Mid-Pacific.

"That's what's good about baseball," said Iolani coach Dean Yonamine. "You don't have to wait a whole week to play again. That's what it comes down to. What we're made of comes down to (today)."

Both teams stranded eight runners in scoring position during yesterday's contest, but Punahou capitalized on Iolani miscues late in the game.

"We couldn't let them run out on us," said Punahou coach Eric Kadooka. "I was probably a little too emotional at the game, but I'm young and excited. I'm excited for kids, excited for our program. It's a huge win. It helps everybody get back in the race."

The Buffanblu broke on top in the second inning when Spencer Kam launched a Corey Yamamoto pitch over the right-field fence for a solo home run. The Raiders tied the game on Jeremy Kamo's run-scoring single in the fourth inning. The teams exchanged runs in the sixth, and Punahou survived a Raider threat in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Punahou then scored twice to go up 4-2 in the eighth. Chris Nakayama scored the tying run on an Iolani error, and Toby Hanzawa's squeeze bunt brought in Leighton Richards -- who was pinch-running for Peter Phillips -- with the eventual winning run.

Iolani scored once to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth.
