Kamehameha songfest airs

Star-Bulletin

The 79th annual Kamehameha Schools song contest will be televised from 6:30 p.m. today on KHON-Fox 2.

The program begins with a 50-minute segment exploring the theme of this year's contest, "Na Himeni O Ka 'Ekalesia'," or "Hawaiian Church Music. This "pre-show" visits some 20 Hawaii churches to learn how music plays a role in worship. The a capella contest among freshmen through senior classes follows live from Blaisdell Arena.

Glimpses of God

Three years ago, a fourth-grade teacher at a tiny Catholic school in Ewa Beach sent students, teachers and parents out to take a picture of God.

Come back, she said, and write about what you found.

The result was such a remarkable collection of pictures and prose that the teacher, Shelly Mecum of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope, was able to interest HarperCollins in a book.

"God's Photo Album" will be released April 10, but advance copies will be sold at the Hawaiian Islands Ministries Honolulu 2001 conference, today through Sunday at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

Mecum makes a presentation on the book in a seminar today at 3:15 p.m. Admission is $225; $95 for students.
