Kern, Brooks named
to U.S. water polo team

Punahou graduates and UCLA teammates Sean Kern and Brandon Brooks have been named to the U.S. men's national water polo team.

Kern, the NCAA Player of the Year this past season, was on the U.S. Olympic team that competed in Sydney last summer. Brooks, the Star-Bulletin's Mr. Basketball in 1999, was a first-team All-American last year for the Bruins as a sophomore goalie.

Viloria unsigned

Boxing promoter Lou DiBella said last night that he's still waiting for world amateur light flyweight champion Brian Viloria to sign with him.

But he expects that to happen soon, and a May 15 pro debut for the Waipahu resident is planned for Pearl Harbor.

It would be televised on ESPN2.

Former WBA junior featherweight champion Jesus Salud would be on the card with Viloria.

"But we have to get the permission of the U.S. Navy to do it at Pearl Harbor," said DiBella, who has five other U.S. boxers from the Sydney Olympics under contract.

He said he'd like to pair Viloria with a fighter who's had no more than four or five pro fights.

The purse would be in the $10,000 range.

Sea Warriors win easily

The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team outscored Teikyo Post University, 42-10, yesterday in sweeping a nonconference doubleheader at Hans L'Orange field.

The Sea Warriors won the first game, 20-6. The contest was called after five innings by mutual consent.

In the second game, Jeremiah Yacap set a school record for longest hitting streak at 20 consecutive games in a 26-4 victory.

HPU sweeps again

Pitchers Jessica Parra and Malia Sullivan each earned complete-game victories as Hawaii Pacific University swept Lipscomb (Tenn.), 8-0 and 4-1, in a nonconference doubleheader at HPU's windward campus field. The Sea Warriors improved to 21-1 while the Bisons fell to 8-11.

Vulcans take a pair

Kristine Kahoalii scattered five hits and the University of Hawaii at Hilo held off a late rally for a 5-2 win over St. Xavier of Illinois in the first game of a nonconference softball doubleheader yesterday at the UHH softball field.

In the second game, Leinani Hashida's homered in the bottom of the seventh to give the Vulcans a 4-3 win.

UHH improved to 10-6 while St. Xavier fell to 0-2.
