No sparks in
fireworks case

Question: What ever happened to the people who were caught in 1999 with mass quantities of fireworks in their Oahu home?

Answer: The city prosecutor's office declined the case involving a Mililani woman charged with the sale and possession of illegal aerial fireworks without a permit in December 1999.

An undercover officer made the arrest after allegedly purchasing fireworks from Charlene Hopfe, 52.

Police seized 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks worth $250,000 from Hopfe's Mililani home Dec. 21, 1999. The fireworks filled a back room used to store and display them.

Hopfe had been charged with a petty misdemeanor, a maximum of six months in jail or a $500 fine.

Police said they did not have enough evidence to charge Hopfe with being involved in importing the merchandise, which is a felony.

Jim Fulton, a spokesman for the city prosecutor's office, said the case went to the U.S. attorney's office.

But the U.S. attorney's office would neither confirm nor deny it is investigating the the matter.
