Lani is dressed for the hula.

Paper dolls go
Hawaiian with
costumes
of the hula

Bullet Keiki Hula Sticker Paper Doll Book: By Yuko Green (Island Heritage), ISBN 0-89610-441-9, 4 pages, softcover, $5.99.

THIS charming activity book for very young children features paper dolls Mele, Kane, Lani and Pono. Children will spend hours outfitting them in muumuu, aloha shirts and brightly colored halau costumes, complete with implements of the hula.

Creating the book was a natural for Yuko Green, who earned an art degree from the University of Washington and worked as a children's clothing designer in Japan.

One problem is that the costumes are made of paper, not reusable plastic, making them difficult to remove from the dolls, so it's best that children pick costumes they really, really like. Otherwise, they're pretty much stuck with their choices.

As a learning tool, it would have been helpful for the book to include a glossary describing the types of costumes and hula implements.

Kids can play stick 'em up.
