George hurls no-hitter
for Seasiders

Summer George pitched a no-hitter as Brigham Young-Hawaii (7-10) swept a softball doubleheader from Elizabethtown College (Pa.), 1-0 and 7-0, yesterday at Laie.

In the opener, Holly Harn drove in the only run and Lyndi Frei pitched a four-hit shutout.

Tami Layton had two hits and drove in three runs to back the pitching of George in the nightcap. George walked five and struck out two.

Elizabethtown is 0-4.

Wahine home opener

The University of Hawaii softball team will play its home opener today at 5 p.m. against Loyola Marymount at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Wahine host Winthrop for two games tomorrow, starting at 5 p.m.

The Malihini Tournament runs Thursday through Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Games begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. Sunday.

Other competing teams include Pacific, Stetson and Western Illinois.

Vulcans fall to No. 2 Rice in extra innings

Second-ranked Rice completed a three-game sweep of Hawaii-Hilo last night, tipping the Vulcans, 9-7, in 10 innings.

Hilo (3-17, 2-10 Western Athletic Conference) went ahead 4-0 in the fifth inning, with two runs coming from a third-inning triple by Ryan Petersen, who went 4-for-5.

The Owls (16-3, 6-0 WAC) took advantage of two Hilo throwing errors in the seventh, then A.J. Porfirio homered and Austin Davis hit an RBI single as Rice took a 7-4 lead.

Hilo came back to the tie the game, however, with three runs in the eighth.

Rice finished off the Vulcans in the 10th inning, thanks to a Jesse Roman double.

UH women in 14th

The UH women's golf team is in 14th place after the first round of the Spartan Invitational yesterday in Salinas, Calif.

Hawaii's Melanie Matsumura shot a 77, tops among the Wahine, and is tied for 36th in the individual competition.

New Mexico State leads with a score of 287. Hawaii is 37 shots back at 324 going into the second round.
